How We Help

Special Education

Ø       Children and young people with learning handicaps attend the Special Education Unit in our Open Doors Special Education Centre.  They cannot benefit from a regular school because they have a learning handicap such as mental retardation, autism or other developmental disability.

Ø       Currently we have 60 pupils in this Unit.  At Open Doors they are able to go to a school where they receive Special Education based on their individual needs.

Ø        In the mornings we have six classes of about 10 pupils each. In the afternoons, we work with pupils who need one-on-one instruction because they cannot yet learn in a group setting.

Ø       Our Unit Coordinator has a Masters Degree in Special Education and each class teacher has a degree in Special Education.

    Reading Clinic

·         Children and young people who have failed to learn to read and write in school enroll in our Reading Clinic Unit. They come in by appointment for one-on-one remediation with one of our four reading specialists.

·         Our average monthly enrolment in the Reading Clinic Unit is 20 students.

·         Many of our students come to us when they try to enter secondary school, but are not given admission because their primary school background was so poor.  With the individual remediation we are able to give them, most of our students are able to develop the literacy skills they need to eventually enter, and succeed in, secondary school.

·         Open Doors students thrive in our Reading Clinic Unit because of the warm, encouraging literature-based learning environment where they learn to love books and develop confidence in themselves as readers and writers.

          Physical Therapy Clinic

Ø       Many of our Open Doors children and young people have conditions which need to be treated by a physical therapist.

Ø       We have a Physical Therapy Clinic within Open Doors Special Education Centre. Our full-time physical therapist treats each individual who requires therapy. Currently 15 of our children use this service.

Ø        We have made some equipment locally but we still need help in fully equipping our Clinic.

    Vocational Training

Ø       We work hard to prepare Open Doors young adults to learn useful skills to prepare them for more independent and useful adult living.

Ø       Right now about 15 Open Doors young people are enrolled in our Vocational Training Unit where they learn how to cook, garden, and make petroleum jelly cream and candles.

Ø        We have recently completed construction of a vocational training workshop with funds from the USA Embassy in Nigeria. Now we are looking for help to finish and equip the inside of the workshop so that our vocational training unit can take off in a big way.

      Workshops for Schools

Open Doors teachers have specialized skills and experience which we believe we should share with others. So we are happy to serve as resource people for workshops for teachers of special needs children and to help regular class teachers improve the way they teach reading and writing.

Consultancy Services

Many parents with special needs children come to Open Doors Special Education Centre for educational assessment and professional advice.

Would You Like to Help?

We invite you to share in the joy of opening doors to learning and opportunity for special needs children in Nigeria.

Here are some ways you can help:

Scholarships

·         One of our most serious needs is for funds for scholarships so we can enroll children whose families cannot afford our fees.

CLICK HERE FOR LIST OF CHILDREN NEEDING SPONSORSHIP

·         Our basic fees are 12, 000 Nigerian Naira per 4-month term (just under $100 at the current exchange rate.) But for many parents this amount is more than they can afford.

Help us complete our buildings

·        We moved to our permanent site in January 2003.

·         We now have one classroom block that was built with contributions from our local community.

·         We also have a vocational training workshop, which was built with funds from the Embassy of the United States of America in Nigeria.

·         We still need to plaster and paint these buildings and to put in running water, etc.

      A School Bus

·         Since we moved to our permanent site, which is located in the outskirts of Jos, many of our families find it very difficult to bring their children to Open Doors Special Education Centre. Many of our children have to come on motorbikes, which is very risky.

·         If we have a school bus we can make sure that our children are transported safely.

  Equipment for:

·         Special Education (toys, teaching aids, etc.)

·         Vocational Training (stoves, refrigerators, knitting machines, etc.)

·         Physical Education/Sports Development (playground, tricycles, balls etc.)

·         Physical Therapy
